Left 4 Dead LAN

While I first made a guide on how to create a LAN / offline multiplayer game on Left 4 Dead 2, I noticed that a significant number of its readers wanted a tutorial for the original L4D game. So here it is.

Left 4 Dead LAN Offline

How to enable Developer Console:

Before hosting a game, you need to enable the Developer Console first.

  1. At the game main menu, click Options.
  2. Click Keyboard/Mouse.
  3. Click Allow Developer Console and select Enabled.

How to create or host a Left 4 Dead local (LAN) game:

  1. With the Developer Console enabled, you can open it anytime in the game by pressing the grave accent key (`) on your keyboard.
  2. Type in the console sv_lan 1 then press Enter.
  3. Type sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 then press Enter.
  4. Type net_start then press Enter.
  5. Type map then press Space. A selection of available maps will be displayed.
  6. Use your keyboard arrows to select your desired map.
  7. Press Enter.

How to join a Left 4 Dead local (LAN) game:

  1. Type in the console sv_lan 1 then press Enter.
  2. Type sv_allow_lobby 0 then press Enter.
  3. Type net_start then press Enter.
  4. Connect to the host server by typing connect [host_IP_address]. Example: connect

How to change game difficulty:

You can change the difficulty of the game by voting. Just press Escape when the map has loaded and click Change Difficulty. Alternately, you can type in the console z_difficulty [difficulty] (for example, z_difficulty Expert).

Just like with its sequel, this offline LAN game guide does not require Hamachi, Garena, or Steam. However, I suppose the version of the game installed on all computers must be the same.
